Meet Catherine

I grew up near Mankato in a small, rural farming community and moved to Rochester after college. With my brother, I own farmland that has been in our family for four generations.  My husband, Jon, is native to Southeast MN having grown up in Hayfield.  Jon and I raised our two children, Connor and Katrina, here.

I have taken the values and lessons I learned growing up and applied them to my work in our community.  As a 30-year resident, I have been actively involved in our community through volunteering on various boards and committees advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities, closing the achievement gap in our schools, women in leadership, and the arts.  In my board/committee work, I have served both in leadership and membership roles.  Having worked in education, both K-12 and higher education, business, and non-profit, I have a rich background and perspective in approaching issues and situations.

Throughout my career and volunteer work, I have focused on finding and implementing solutions.  An important part of this process is digging deeper and looking for the root cause in order to create long-lasting change.

I look forward to applying my background and experiences to my role as your District 5 County Commissioner.

My Values

If you can’t trust someone to behave in a consistent way, how can you trust them to represent you when tough decisions need to be made? I will act consistently to build your trust and my actions will speak much louder my words.  I will practice humility when listening and acting, demonstrate courage when making tough decisions, and keep the just and fair treatment of people as a priority when acting.

Government should be by the people, for the people. To achieve this, we need those with lived experiences at the table sharing their stories, ideas, and co-creating solutions.  We cannot have long-lasting, sustainable change without those most impacted by policies, programs, and decisions authentically and actively involved in all aspects of the process. As county commissioner, I will create new avenues for residents to provide input to assure all voices are heard and their input is acted upon to create even better policies, programs, and decisions.

County commissioners are responsible for setting policy and making budget decisions. This responsibility is huge. We are using resources from people to try to positively impact people’s lives.   I will ask tough questions to discover if resources are being used in a way that impacts people and gets to the root cause of issues in order to create sustainable, long-term change.

Our county deals with big issues and decisions.  This means solutions may take longer to implement because of the complexity of analyzing the issue, working with or changing existing systems, and the length of time it can take before we see results.  Throughout my career in education, business, and volunteering, I have worked on projects and issues that require a combination of patience, resilience, and tenacity in order to sustain focus and momentum.  As county commissioner, I plan to use these skills to drive towards solutions that create a better county for us all.
